Trips On A Whim

Some of the best trips I have been on have been on a whim

Aside from heralding a spontaneous vacation, I wanted to highlight what helps me get trips “out the group chat.”

The two easiest ways are:

  1. Make sure the group chat is just you and yourself.
  2. Have as few people involved as possible.

This is not to say avoid group trips, but if you really want to go somewhere- your best chance of making it happen is my minimizing scheduling roadblocks/other peoples conflicting opinions.

If you are able to do that, you can probably think of a few people that would be willing to send it. These are a select few that are likely similar minded in travel preference (i.e. how you like to travel). If they take some convincing, I try my best to nurse the situation to a point where their interest forces them to really think about it (some minor gaslighting never hurts). If they are on the edge, I move on to the next step.

Planning the Trip

Now the idea and potential party is set, all that is left is to outline what exactly the trip entails.

This step is a race against the clock.

You want to dish this out as quick as possible so your party doesn’t have time to think of reasons not to go (seriously).

I usually jot down a simple outline: route and logistics, on scratch paper. Send this, with some dope pictures of the location, and there’s no way they aren’t convinced, especially if they were on the fence beforehand.

Cementing The Idea

Now with confirmation in tow, you can book tickets. With that, your trip is essentially guaranteed.

Planning logistics with known flights is 5X easier.

Now for the full plan. First piece of advice is to not over-plan, leave room/time to explore, get lost, and be spontaneous. I use WonderBlog to layout a shared itinerary where I can list out things we can do on a given day, in addition to location, transportation, and lodging.

Why am I writing this? Well, I planned, convinced mates for, and booked a trip in one day.

Crazy? Probably.

Financially responsible? Not at all.

Yet, I’m excited to explore 3 National Parks I’ve always wanted to visit, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, and Glacier National Park! These trips tend to be lighter on the wallet than an international fiesta but an adventure nonetheless; excited to act on another video idea as well.

Well, hope this set the stage for future content, and I hope this helps those of you itching to travel- make it happen!
